Chapter Nine
I was awoken the next morning by the sounds of my companions preparing a morning meal, and I swung my legs out of my hammock to be met by a handful of smiling faces. The intimacy of our campsites ever since the sinkhole caused us to forge an even deeper bond with each other, and we were running like a well-oiled machine. Where one person needed help, someone else seamlessly stepped in to pick up the slack.
After I pulled on my outer clothes and pulled down my hammock, Luxe handed me a warm bowl of breakfast with a wink to remind me of our previous nightâs escapades. I felt the familiar tingle in my groin at the thought of our time together, and I gave her a look that made it clear exactly what I was thinking.
âWell, good morning.â The polar bear shifter blushed, and she swayed her hips in a suggestive manner as she walked away.
âWe are pretty much ready to leave,â Calantha reported as she planted a quick kiss on my cheek. âWe just wanted to give you as much rest as we could. Luxe said you didnât sleep well?â
âI had some⦠interesting dreams,â I admitted. âIt almost seemed like a message.â
âIs the Ulvant getting prophetic dreams instead of the groupâs mystic?â Zolas scoffed in fake offense. âYouâre going to have to tell me all about it once we get on the road.â
âDeal.â I smirked. âI think youâll be eager to dig into the deeper meaning.â
âAh, yes, one of my favorite pastimes.â The mystic gave me a solemn nod. âI will give it my full attention as soon as we have space to discuss the details.â
âHow did everyone else sleep?â I asked as I cast a curious glance around the campfire.
My friends and lovers shared their evening experiences, and everyone reported zero incidents during their watch shifts, but it was still nice to know everyone took a turn keeping our perimeter guarded during the night. I scooped up the scrambled eggs, sausage, and vegetables mix in my bowl as I listened, and by the time I finished my meal, the campsite was broken down.
âI feel spoiled,â I teased. âA guy could get used to this kind of treatment.â
âOh, hush,â Willow laughed. âYou do so much for us, taking care of our campsite is the least we can do.â
âYouâve always been the leader who stands in the mud side by side with his troops,â Zolas added. âYou lead by example, and you never hesitate to put in some hard work.â
âNow youâre going to make me blush,â I said as I bumped my shoulder into the mysticâs. âIâll be writing poetry before you know it.â
âSome Ulvant prose sounds entertaining at least,â Rowan chimed in. âI wonder if the verses would change mid-rhymeâ¦â
It took me a second to pick up on his shifter joke, but the entire group seemed to realize it simultaneously, and we all cracked up laughing. It was nice to see the goat-man coming out of his
